In 1839 the office of the County Recorder was created by the First Legislative Assembly of the Territory of Iowa.  Our office continues to maintain official records of documents that affect title to real estate in Worth County.  By maintaining these records, it protects the innocent third parties in real estate transactions.  Most transactions that pertaining to real estate will begin in our office and affects the County Auditor's Office, County Assessor's Office, and County Treasurer's Office.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain all land records, relating to all property in Worth County, Iowa.  Examples:  Deeds, Contracts, Mortgages, Assignments & Releases, Federal & State Tax Liens, Affidavits, Plats & Surveys, Section Corners Certificates, Military Service Records, Easements, etc.  2004 & 2005 land records can be found at the Iowa Land Records web site.
  • Issue Licenses for the Department of Natural Resources:  ATV & Snowmobile License Titles/Liens, Boat License/Titles/Liens, Licenses sold through the ELSI System (Electronic License System for Iowa) Examples:  Hunting, Fishing, Deer, Turkey, Stamps, related license and regulations.  All licenses and regulations may also be obtained from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
  • Passport Applications are processed at our office but must be accompanied by a recent passport size photo, certified copy birth certificate and picture ID.  Forms can be obtained from our office or contact the National Passport Information Center.
  • Vital Records:  Registrar for Marriage, Birth, and Death Records; Issuance of Marriage License for State of Iowa; Certified copies of birth, marriage, and death where the event happened in Worth County.
Fee Schedules

E-Commerce  As of July 1, 2009, a $3.00 fee will be collected for each document/instrument/transaction that is recorded.  This fee is in addition to the $1.00 document fee that is already being collected.

Deeds, Changes of Title, Name Changes & Contracts [Code, Sec. 331.604] $9.00 for the first page (which includes $3.00 E-Commerce fee & $1.00 Record Management Fee, $5.00 for every additional page + Auditor's Transfer Fee (see below)*

Multi-Purpose Real Estate Related Filings (i.e., instruments that release multiple mortgages, multiple assignments, etc.) [82 O.A.G. 417, May 3, 1982] See Chapter 2, page 12.

$9.00 for the first page (which includes $3.00 E-Commerce Fee & $1.00 Record Management Fee) & $5.00 for every additional page.  The first document mentioned is included in this fee and each additional document would be $9.00 per document.

All Other Real Estate Related Filings [Secs. 331.602; 331.604] $9.00 for the first page (which includes $3.00 E-Commerce fee & $1.00 Record Management Fee & $5.00 for every additional page.

*Auditor Transfer Fees $5.00 per block or section [Sec 331.507(2)]  A parcel of real estate includes:  For real estate outside a city's limits, all contiguous land lying within a numbered section; for real estate located within a city, all contiguous land lying within a platted block or subdivision.  Within a numbered section, platted block or subdivision, land separated only by a public street, alley, or highway remains contiguous.  Auditor's fee shall not exceed $50.00 for one instrument.

Federal Tax Form Search [Sec. 331.609(3)d] See Figure 6-1, page 100.  $6.00 per request, copies are $5.00 per page.

Certificated Copy Fee (any document) $5.00 plus copy cost.  Copy fees are the discretion of the Recorder:  Faxed Copy = $1.50 per page, Mailed copy = $1.00 per page, Copy Picked Up = $0.50 per page.

Plat of Survey Only $7.00 for the first page (which includes $1.00 E-Commerce Fee & $1.00 Record Management Fee) and $5.00 for each additional page.  If more than one section is referenced, it would be a fee of $5.00 for each additional section (per Recorder's Association agreement). Corner Certificates, Dedication of Plats, and anything other than Plat of Survey have a recording fee of $9.00 for the first page and $5.00 for each additional page.

[331.604(2)] A county shall not be required to pay a fee to the recorder for filing or recording instruments.
